UI Engineers for a Sustainable World
UI Engineers Without Borders

At the University of Iowa, College of Engineering, we have student chapters for Engineers for a Sustainable World (UI ESW) & Engineers Without Borders (UI EWB).  Our rich country focused sustainability efforts on the University of Iowa Campus, in the Iowa City area, in the State and in the Nation are administered through UI ESW.  Our poor country focused, international, sustainable development efforts are administered through UI EWB.  The fundamentals of sound engineering practice, community partnering, social justice, appropriate technology, environmental sustainability and education are nurtured and practiced by both organizations making a shared leadership structure advantageous.

Every day, over one third of the world’s people are trying to work their way out of poverty. For many, the daily struggle for water, sanitation, energy, and other basic services are barriers to more productive lives. Additionally, the growing world population continues to increase the demand on scarce natural resources, requiring innovative solutions and cooperation to ensure that we can provide for the needs of current and future generations.

The University of Iowa, College of Engineering, UI ESW/EWB organization is comprised of students and professionals, mainly with engineering backgrounds, that are willing to provide sustainable solutions that fit local realities all over the world. Our partnership with Rotary International District 6000 greatly facilitates our commitment to international service by providing local contacts in foreign lands in addition to logistical and financial support.
