– President of Engineers for a Sustainable World
I am a military veteran, having served 6 years in the U.S.
Navy aboard a fast-attack submarine (USS San Juan) as a nuclear propulsion plant
operator. Currently I am pursuing a civil/environmental engineering degree at
the University of Iowa. I also work as a licensed water treatment plant
operator at the University, and as a research assistant for Professor Craig
Just. Along with my role as president, I am heading up the organizing effort
for a 350.org event to promote climate change awareness.
David Crawford – Habitat for Humanity
Home Energy Monitoring Project Leader

I am a junior at the University of Iowa pursuing an
Environmental Engineering major and a French minor. Upon completion of my
undergraduate studies I would like to consider graduate school, and I eventually
plan to work overseas in underdeveloped countries improving communities’
standards of living. I joined Engineers for a Sustainable World in the spring
of my sophomore year and have participated in various projects and volunteer
activities since, such as The Green Expo, recycling for the Jazz Festival,
Rummage at the Ramp, and ESW’s sustainability booth at the Iowa State Fair. I
also helped complete ESW’s first lighting audit of North Hall. I am currently
working on an energy audit project with Habitat for Humanity that involves
implementing an energy monitoring device in new homes to allow homeowners to
gain a visual understanding of their energy consumption and its equivalent
monetary value.
Amber Johnson – Lighting Audits Project Leader

involved with rummage in the ramp, recycling at Jazzfest, and outreach at the
Green Expo and Iowa State Fair. Interests: In addition to ESW, I am involved in
the leadership teams of two other engineering student organizations as the
Conference Chair of Society of Women Engineers and Vice President of American
Institute of Chemical Engineers. In my free time I enjoy being outdoors,

which allows me to coordinate social and community service events for ESW
members. I also provide logistical assistance to project leaders and am always
welcoming of new ideas for projects and events. In addition to ESW, I am a
member of Engineers Without Borders, the American Society of Civil Engineers,
Chi Epsilon, and mentor through the Women in Science and Engineering program. I
look forward to making this a great year for everyone involved with ESW!
Samuel Boland – Graduate Student Liaison

I am currently in the first year of a Master’s in
Hydraulics and Water Resources; I received my undergraduate degree in
Environmental Engineering with a focus on sustainability from the University of
Iowa. As an undergraduate, I served as president of ESW and led a variety of
projects that worked towards creating a more environmentally responsible
university and community. These projects include waste sorts, which serve as the
starting point for recycling programs, campus lighting audits, energy audits for
the Iowa City community school district, and a variety of outreach events. I was
also an executive director for the UI Environmental Coalition. I have experience
getting new ideas started, so if you have any projects that you would like to
launch or old ideas that you believe the university should be doing already,
feel free to approach me and we will make it happen.
